Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Mission Statement: “Providing opportunities for better work solutions”
What is AMI?
AMI is an integrated system of smart meters, devices, and communication networks that enable two-way communication.
AMI serves as the cornerstone of HCWA's future endeavors, promising a more customer-centric and efficient service experience overall. The ongoing upgrade of our water meter system reflects our unwavering commitment to continual enhancement of our infrastructure, ensuring we replace aging meters nearing the end of their lifespan.
Through AMI, customers have the convenience of near-to-real-time tracking and management of their water usage and higher- level of leak detection capabilities.
What to expect during the change-out process:
The installation process typically lasts less than 15 minutes, during which your water service will be briefly interrupted. Our dedicated and trusted contractors will handle the installation of the meter upgrades. They will courteously knock on your door beforehand, introduce themselves, and provide a brief explanation of the process. In the event you're unavailable, they'll leave a door hanger once the job is finished.
HCWA typically notifies customers about 30 days in advance prior to scheduling the change-out. And here's the good news: there's absolutely no charge or deposit required for these meter upgrades!
If you have questions about the AMI system or meter change-out process, please call 770-914-3688 between the hours of 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM to speak with the AMI Department or email us at AMI@hcwa.com.

FAQs
A smart meter is a digital device that communicates via a secure wireless network. It offers various improved benefits and services to our customers and plays a crucial role in HCWA's endeavors to modernize our community's water distribution system for enhanced reliability.
Smart meters gather water usage information and transmit data using a low-power radio over a secure wireless network. The meters can also receive communication from HCWA towers, which allows for remote connection and disconnection of service. The information is sent using short radio transmissions similar to a text message sent from a cell phone.
Meters are being changed out by routes throughout the county. Each route is chosen based on the proximity to the towers to ensure successful over air readings. Customers in an upcoming change out route will be sent a letter or a phone call approximately 30 days prior to the change out.
Water meter upgrades typically have minimal impact on the surrounding landscape. In rare cases where maintenance is needed before upgrading or landscaping is adjacent to the water meter box, there may be a slight disturbance. Rest assured, we strive to leave the area in its original or improved condition.
Smart meters transmit whole-house water usage data using low-watt radio frequency, mirroring the information gathered by existing meters. No personal information, such as names or addresses, are collected or transmitted to HCWA via the secure wireless network. These meters employ robust security measures, including data encryption comparable to that used by cell phone carriers and online banking services.
For over 50 years, researchers have analyzed the health effects of RF energy. With the rise in cell phone usage, numerous studies have explored RF energy and cell phones. Recent research on advanced meters indicates that their RF energy emissions are significantly lower than those of cell phones. Reputable organizations worldwide have reviewed scientific literature on RF energy, consistently concluding that advanced meters pose no adverse health effects. We prioritize your safety and remain vigilant in reviewing scientific research on RF energy impacts.
