Community Shred Day Marks Tax Season's End

The Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) hosted a Community Shred Day on Saturday April 30, at its McDonough headquarters, and the turnout was tremendous, according to Authority officials.

From the number of residents who made their way to the HCWA Community Shred Day, the event was perfectly timed, coming a few weeks after tax season. It allowed local residents and businesses an opportunity to shred those tax documents and other files that have been collecting dust.

When the event opened at 9:00 a.m., cars were already lined up to drop off materials for shredding and recycling. Authority officials estimate more than 50 cars came through the facility that day, resulting in tons of documents shredded. An added benefit is that these documents were diverted from the solid waste stream.

River Mill Data Management provided the on-site shredding service. River Mill’s shredding services area covers south metro Atlanta, east to Augusta, and all of South Georgia. The company specializes in securely and cost-effectively disposing of sensitive business paperwork and files.

HCWA Chair Cletonya LaGrand, who is a tax accountant and business consulting professional by trade, suggested that the Authority staff offer the Shred Day event to the community, having seen the need for such a service from her experience helping clients with tax returns, from preparation to filing. Chair LaGrand was on hand to help the HCWA staff welcome visitors and process their documents to be shredded during the event.

The items the Authority accepted during the Community Shred Day included:

Office Paper

Office Paper with Paper Clips and/or Rubber Bands

Manilla Folders

Handing File Folders
