Union Grove Middle School Student Wins Essay Contest

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District recently announced the winners of their annual Essay Contest, and Union Grove Middle School student Sidney Spencer is among the 15 regional winners from the respective counties and municipalities across the district.

Spencer received accolades from the Metro Water District because of her “exemplary essay that explores how a clean, abundant water supply is critical to the health and livelihoods of people across the globe.”

The 21st Annual Metro Water District Essay Contest challenges entrants to write a 300–500-word essay addressing one of two topics. Students had the option of (1) researching the last major drought or flooding event in metro Atlanta, while describing how their local communities and businesses adapted to conditions; or (2) describe how more extreme drought and flooding events affect our access to clean, safe water, and how the region can be more water resilient in the face of these events.

During the 21-year history of the Metro Water District Essay Contest, this outreach activity has challenged thousands of middle school students to think critically about the conservation and protection of water resources across the region. This year, more than 600 middle school students took part in the Essay Contest.

The annual Essay Contest is one of many educational outreach initiatives conducted by the Metro Water District to raise awareness about conservation efforts and the importance of water quality preservation in the Atlanta region.

The HCWA adheres to oversight provided by the Metro Water District because of Henry County’s inclusion as one of the counties or municipalities within the region, which consists of the City of Atlanta, Bartow County, Cherokee County, Clayton County, Cobb County, Coweta County, DeKalb County, Douglas County, Fayette County, Forsyth County, Fulton County, Gwinnett County, Hall County, Henry County, Paulding County, and Rockdale County.

The Metro Water District was founded to develop a comprehensive regional and water-specific Water Resources Management Plan to be implemented by local governments and utilities within the 15-county metro Atlanta region.
